What’s Not Hot: Mean Girls

Don’t get me wrong… I love the movie but in real life mean girls are so NOT HOT. Bullying is a hot topic issue these days. With an increase in suicide rates amongst young tweens and teens people are finally starting to take notice to this issue. This is an issue that has been around for years and saw little face time among school officials. In high school I was bullied terribly and received no support from the school despite my mothers many calls and complaints. I heard from guidance counselors and teachers alike “people who bully are insecure” its that phrase we throw around to try to make the victims of these horrific events feel better, however it’s not the reality for all bullies and rarely makes the victim feel any sense of relief. Once upon a time when someone was bullied they were safe when they went home, unfortunately today with facebook, the internet, text messaging this just isn’t the case. Kids are being tortured from the safety of their bedrooms, parents can’t keep them safe because the abuse is everywhere.

1 in 4 teens are bullied

The only thing that will change this is if kids get involved in this movement adults need to stop arguing about how to handle it and begin asking for help from the only people who can change it… other teenagers need to stand up and shout out this is NOT okay. Bystanders continue the violence, silence continues the acceptance and keeps mean girls on top. Check out the teens against bullying website below to see how you can get involved and how other teens have decided to speak out!

(important note: bullying can happen to anyone it is not gender specific… even though I wrote about mean girls anyone can be a bully)
